I’m Catherine, a research engineer specialising in machine learning for speech, language and dialogue technology.  I originally wanted to be a mechanical engineer and so chose to study Engineering. But I got interested in machine learning during the final year of my course, particularly for tasks like speech and vision which seem so easy to us humans but are really hard to get computers to do well.

After an undergrad degree in Engineering and Computing, an MPhil in speech and language technology, and a PhD focused on speech recognition, I left for industrial research at Toshiba in 2008. My daughter was born in 2011, and after maternity leave I returned to university to take up a postdoc position. My son was born in July 2013, and a few months later I moved back to industry, now working at Amazon.
